UPM Pulp Mills in Finland to Curtail Production Amid Market Conditions and High Costs
UPM is temporarily curtailing production at its Kaukas and Kymi pulp mills in Finland to better align with current market conditions and manage rising costs. The shutdown at the Kaukas pulp mill began on September 9, followed by the Kymi mill on September 23, with both expected to last approximately three weeks. During this period, maintenance work will be conducted, though temporary layoffs are possible. Despite these curtailments, UPM’s pulp mills in Pietarsaari, Finland, and Uruguay continue operating at full capacity, ensuring ongoing customer deliveries. The production adjustments come amid a challenging global pulp and paper market impacted by high wood prices, continued digitalization reducing graphic paper demand, and macroeconomic uncertainties. UPM aims to improve cost efficiency and profitability through these measures, while also planning permanent closures in related paper production sites as part of structural capacity optimization efforts.
