Mondi South Africa Boosts Energy Self-Sufficiency and Climate Resilience at Merebank Mill

Mondi’s Merebank paper mill in Durban, South Africa, has advanced its sustainability agenda with a new condensing steam turbine installation that enables the mill to produce 60% of its own electricity, reducing reliance on external power and lowering costs. The upgrade is a pivotal step toward future full energy self-sufficiency and aligns with Mondi’s MAP2030 sustainability program. Complementing the turbine project, two flood-proofing initiatives—flood gates and inflatable barriers—have been completed to protect the mill and surrounding communities from natural disasters, thereby ensuring business continuity. These advancements contribute to Mondi’s goals of energy independence, climate resilience, and carbon footprint reduction in a challenging environmental context.
