Mondi Launches State-of-the-Art Recycled Containerboard Mill in Duino, Italy
In April 2025, Mondi celebrated the successful start-up of its newly converted recycled containerboard mill in Duino, Italy, marking a significant milestone in the company’s push for sustainable packaging solutions. The €200 million investment involved transforming an existing paper machine to produce high-quality recycled containerboard, underlining Mondi’s commitment to environmental responsibility and supply chain resilience. The new paper machine, once fully ramped up, will produce 420,000 tonnes of premium recycled containerboard annually. This includes waste-based fluting starting at 80 gsm, testliner from 90 gsm upwards, and a wide range of paper reel sizes, making it the widest recycled paper machine in Mondi’s portfolio at 8.5 meters. Its strategic location offers short delivery distances to local and regional markets, with access to international customers via nearby ports. Klaus Peller, COO of Mondi Containerboard, highlighted the project’s success, stating, “Launching this mill on time demonstrates our team’s strength and illustrates our long-term promise to customers. We are investing in their future by providing resilient supply, sustainable packaging products, and excellent service.” Mondi’s Duino mill enhances the company’s integrated value chain, expanding its network to six containerboard mills worldwide. It offers customers a diverse containerboard portfolio ranging from fully recycled to 100% virgin fiber grades, tailored to meet the varied demands of industries such as eCommerce, consumer goods, and heavy-duty applications. This development not only supports cost-efficient, fully recyclable packaging but also contributes to lowering greenhouse gas emissions by prioritizing local sourcing and minimising transport distances. With expert support and digital tools like the myMondi platform and Orange Board technical service, Mondi continues to innovate and strengthen its position as a global leader in sustainable packaging.
