Carlsberg Britvic Partners with DS Smith to Launch Sustainable Bag-in-Box Packaging Reducing Over 50 Tonnes of CO2 Emissions
Carlsberg Britvic has collaborated with DS Smith to develop a new fibre-based "Bag-in-Box" packaging design, targeting significant reductions in carbon emissions and supply chain efficiencies. The innovative OTOR8 design features an eight-sided shape that enhances durability and allows 25% more boxes per pallet, reducing the number of pallets and transport vehicles needed annually for shipments between the Leeds manufacturing facility and the Lutterworth distribution center. This redesign improves warehouse space utilization, reduces leakage risks, and offers vertical stability benefits. The partnership forms part of Carlsberg Britvic’s long-standing commitment to carbon footprint reduction, with a broader focus on sustainable practices like using solar energy and investing over £9 million in carbon-cutting technologies at UK soft drink factories. DS Smith emphasized its dedication to innovation and sustainability in supporting Carlsberg Britvic’s journey to net-zero emissions.
